It was a rainy spring evening in Forks. The sky was so full of clouds it was already dark and it was difficult to determine what time it was, but the decrease in traffic now that rush hour was over (if you could even call it rush hour) was a good indication that it was around 6:30, dinner time for most of the good people of Forks. Bella usually chose this time to venture out. She ran into less people she knew well and was able to avoid prodding questions about her life. Now six years since her marriage into the Cullen family most of the questions had died down and people had gotten used to her new "look" which they had attributed to a miracle makeover by Alice. But she still got the occasional stare of funny question.
She pulled on to the main street in the silver Mercedes Guardian Edward had bought her so long ago. It still looked brand new. She barely ever had to drive it. She hated it. It made her miss her beat up but perfectly adequate red truck. But she couldn't waste this car by buying a new one. Edward was starting to make comments about this one getting "old" by his standards. Most likely he would buy her a new one for Christmas and she would have to feel guilty all over again.
Bella parked into the furthest spot from the door at the small convenient store on the main stretch. She was greatly in need of a new book. She had nearly exhausted Carlisle's vast library and not needing to sleep or eat left her with a lot of time on her hands. There was no book store here in Forks, but the lady who owned the convenient store at least made sure to have a few copies of the newest bestseller in stock. She was wearing a pair of worn in jeans rolled up above her ankles, a pair of yellow flip flops and a gray v-neck t-shirt. Alice tried to buy her "nicer" clothes, but Bella still preferred to dress down on a daily basis. Her dark brown hair was perfectly disheveled and hung around her shoulders.
She held her pocket book above her head as she trotted through the rainy parking lot and into the warm store, the puddles splashing lightly and soaking her feet and ankles. The bell on the door rang out as it closed. A high school aged girl was working behind the corner and quickly put down the gossip magazine she was reading when the bell rang. When she saw it was Bella, a girl around her age, she picked the magazine back up and continued to read, chewing her gum loudly.
Bella smiled and shrugged as she made her way to the aisle that had a mish mosh of assorted books and magazines as well as miscellaneous kitchen items and cleaning supplies. She picked up a new paperback thriller and started to read the back cover.

For one reason or another Zak had been away more often then he let up too. She couldnt recall how many times that she woke in the middle of the night, only to turn and see him not beside her. It was so cold without him, and the cold seemed to break down her reserve. She knew he had a job to do, that it was his blood line to protect. Something was going on, and he wasnt telling her. Like she could really be scared by this fact. Being the 'wolf girl' she knew that nasty things that lurked in the woods. Vampires. Bloodsuckers.
Just the thought sent a chill down her spine as she walked along the sidewalk. Vampires living in the world, killing people and leaving no trace. It was vile. She couldnt understand why people thought they were sexy, and how they evolved that way. Looking back through history, they started out as pale, horrible figures. Long nails, bald, elf like ears...and slowly as the ages went on, they turned into these sex gods. It made no sense. They still paled in comparison to her darling shifters in her mind. Strong, graceful, and primal. The animal within them balanced with the human shell.
Corliss found herself often just watching Zak around the house, seeing how he looked to things and took in the world. How he glanced at objects, how he smelled certain things and let the scent roll over his tongue. He amazed her every day. And even though she loved him with all her heart, she knew that there was no way that she could understand that side of him. The beast. So whenever she looked at Zak, she understood that she'd never be able to love all of him.
Pushing the door to the small store open, she felt the urge to grab a little bit of ice cream. Ben and Jerrys phish food would be wonderful right now. She was dressed some of Zak's mothers clothing. A simple gray t-shirt with small holes around the neck and base from age, and a pair of black sweatpants. Most of her clothing was still packed up in RI, seeing they had yet to make the trip to get most of her things. Yes her parents came for the wedding, but could only bring so much in one suitcase. Her canvas hightops shuffled along as she looked through the shelves of munchie foods and overpriced snacks.
Her chesnut locks were pulled back into a small low ponytail, her black baseball cap firmly upon her head. She looked like a raggamuffin, and didnt care. The Rez didnt have a dress code, and she didnt think Forks would mind ither. The gray tee shirt was splattered with rain as she reached the freezer, pulling her icecream and grinning.

Bella was onto another book now. Books these days just weren't written the way they used to be. She had always been a fan of the classics, but seeing as how she had exhausted Carlisle's and her own library she had moved on to new releases. It was at least SOMETHING to read.
The little bell on the door rang and she heard the girl at the counter put her magazine down suddenly again as she had when Bella came in and then picked it back up. Out of no where the stench hit her. It was foul. Dog. She had forgotten what other shape shifters smelled like. She had gotten so used to the way Jake, Seth and Leah smelled it didn't bother her too much, but this, this was awful. She scaned the aisles not seeing anyone out of the ordinary. No one of Quilute decent, no huge teenage boys. Just one girl scanning the freezer aisle. She inhaled again. Ah... there was human blood mixed in too. She wasn't a shape shifter but she was tied to the pack.
She didn't recognize the girl. No one she had seen with the pack, though she hadn't been around anyone but Jake, Seth and Leah since her transformation. Of course the others would imprint, she must be one of the 'mates'. She watched, keeping her eyes low as if she was reading while the girl eyed the Ben & Jerri's section. Bella missed ice cream. It was one of the only human foods the craved still, but she she tried to eat it again it tasted awful, not at all how she remembered. But she missed the simple feeling of pleasure she used to get from ice cream, completely different than the satisfaction blood now gave her.
Curiosity was getting the better of her. It had been ages since she had had much female companionship outside of her family. She tucked the book under her pocketbook, it would do before heading over the freezer asile herself to get a better look.

With her stash in hand, she now was looking through for something Zak would enjoy. Then again he was the one eatting raw animals out in the woods so he wasnt so hard to pick for. Caramel Sutra would do for him, and maybe he would get the hint for later. With a nothing but wicked grin, she pulled the second ice cream and then slowly made her way to the counter.
Of course along her way, she picked up more snacks for Zak, and herself. She was lucky that the fact her books were doing well in sales, certainly not within the top ten but enough to pay for the utilitys and the other things that they needed to live. She was working on a fifth book now, diving deeper into the history of myths and just how they evolved over time. She wasnt sure if it would be a good seller, but even if it was brought up in college film courses she'd be happy with herself.
Setting the stash upon the counter, she smiled to the teenager and leaned against it, her eyes turning to the spinning rack of books. All romance novles. Some with knights and princess's plastered on the covers, others with modern guy and girl on it. Spinning still, she thoughtlessly picked up one by Cassie Edwards, looking at the sexy Native American upon the cover and set it with the rest of her stuff. Nothing like a guilty pleasure that she could laugh about in bed.

Bella hung back as the girl moved on, trying to seem too creepy, though at the moment she felt a little silly and cliche, like a stalking vampire from an old horror movie. She chuckled a little to herself at the thought of stalking a human being instead of a deer or mountain lion. She grabbed a pint of some ice cream, she didn't bother to look at the label, seeing as she would not be eating it (though she was sure someone would eat it, whether it was Nes or Jake).
She made her way back the the counter and stood in line behind the girl, hoping she wasn't being too obvious. "You're a fan of Cassie Edwards?" She blurted out. Why did she say that? What possibly compelled her to open her stupid mouth and say something to this girl? And why did it have to be something that dumb? "I haven't read that one." She said trying o save herself. It was the truth though, she hadn't read that one, nor had she read any of the others by that author. She had never been a huge fan of romance novels unless they were at least 50 years old. Though she had never really given them a fair shot. She was a bit of a literature snob.

"Hurm?" Corliss turned, ignoring the teenager at the counter as she called out the total to the overpriced goods. "Oh, not really...just need some trash to read." She grinned, tapping the cover of the book. She could kill it in about a night, perfect for these eves of Zak and his constant partroling. TV did nothing for her, and seeing they only had basic channels she could only watch the news so very often. The world falling apart at the seams didnt make her feel very comfortable, but her little corner of the universe made her feel very secure. Her, her wolf man, and the pack.
She had taken up the mantel of 'den mother', often having the boys over for dinner where she and Zak cooked more then was needed for a entire army. Dozens of eggs, piles of steaks and endless baked potatoes. Pizza night was another story, and she often felt bad for the delivery boy having to juggle at least 10 pizza boxes on his own. In the end though she knew that the pack was happy, so Zak was pleased, and that made her beam.
Absently her fingers traced over her neck, feeling the large smooth stone of turquoise upon her choker. It was only when the cashire cleared her throat in a rude manner that Corliss's cheeks flushed with color, laughing quietly as she then turned and removed a crumpled twenty from her bra, passing it over to the teen. "Its better then TV at least."

Bella nearly laughed out loud. The girl had nearly read her mind. She was so tried of TV these days. They had every channel on the planet and she often couldn't settle on one thing she really found interesting. Books she could at least take outside when it was nice, or up to their room and sit in the bed they never slept in when it wasn't. She nearly always found herself getting lost in books, even if they were poorly written or something she had read a thousand times.
"Tell me about it." She said rolling her eyes. "I'm Bella." She said instinctively sticking her hand out to the girl when the cashier had given her back her receipt and change. She had so many human habits she hadn't grown out of she often forgot about her cold skin, strange eyes or newly beautiful body and face. She dreaded the day she accidently made her way downtown when the sun was shining and sparkled in front of all the good people of Forks, something she certainly would have had nightmares about if she slept.

Turning from the counter with her plastic bag in hand, 'thank you' scrawled across it in bright red letters, she couldnt help but smirk at the irony of it. She knew that the teenager would much rather be doing things with her friends or boyfriend, and wouldnt thank her if it was the last thing she had to do. Knowing that it was quite the hike from Forks to La Push, and the ice cream only had a limited shelf life and bit her lower lip, looking to Bellas hand.
"I'm Corliss Makwa.." She responded, gingerly taking the girls hand but drawing back the second she did. Wasnt she the one just holding ice cream? How could this girls hand feel like she just pulled it from a snowbank? It was as if Zak was within her mind, growling softly as the skin of the pair made contact. "Its nice to meet you..but..I've gota go..ice cream n' all...hope you find a good one.." She nodded her chin twords the spindly book rack.

The girl jerked a little at the touch of her hand. I'm such an idiot she thought to herself. She chuckled uncomfortablly to herself and quickly grabbed the pint of ice cream she had in the other hand, trying to play it off like her hand was cold from the ice cream. She always found a way to screw things up.
Makwa. Bella's sharp mind ran through members of the pack quickly. Zakel Makwa? Of course. She had heard there had been a wedding at La Push. She had never met Zak, but Jake and Seth had mentioned him before. So she was from the reservation. That was a long walk and she hadn't seen another car in the lot, nor did the girl carry any car keys. She looked out the window as she payed quickly for the book and ice cream with her "one touch' credit card.
She walked out the door behind the girl with her car keys in hands and started to make her way to the silver car parked where she left it.

A shudder ran down her spine as she pushed the door open, walking out into the cool air of Forks. The girls hand was just cold due to the ice cream, nothing more. But Zak's growling within her mind couldnt be ignored. Better not to mention this to him, she simply moved along the sand walkpath along the side of the road. Forks was far too poor to have nice smooth sidewalks, so a beaten trail was all that it could provide. It suited her just fine. She wasnt sure why she decided to take the very long walk into Forks, where La Push has a small store just like the one here. Maybe it was to just pass the time.
Lately she had found herself looking for things to do. Ways to get herself into something. Her books were doing well, and her small part time job at the La Push library was nothing more then a reason to get out of the house. Oh yes the house, that was impectable clean because she didnt have anything else to do with her time. The house that seemed empty more often then full. Biting her lower lip, Corliss turned and looked down the main drag of Forks. This was where it all started. The Bed and Breakfast, the midnight trip into the woods..
Heaving a sight, she paused as her sea-foam eyes caught the girl lingering by a silver car. It was not the normal beat around truck, but a fancy sports car of some type. She saw a good handful of people driving them in Forks...just where the hell did they work?

Bella pressed the unlock button on her key chain and tossed the back in the back seat before stepping in herself. She watched as Corliss started to head down the street on foot. The rain had stopped for the moment but the trail was muddy and littered with puddles. Plus the clouds still looked like the would open at any moment. This girl was WALKING back to La Push? She sighed and slid into the low black leather seat, turning on the quiet motor and pulling out of the lot.
She turned onto the main street in Forks and pulled up slowly next to the girl. Bella opened the passenger window and leaned over "I don't mean to be a creep, but if you want I can dive you home." She suggested, then realized driving around La Push would probably not be the more advisable thing to do since she was now a Cullen. "Or I can at least take you part of the way."

The car pulling beside her was no suprise, and nither was the offer. The girl was just trying to be nice of course, and why shouldnt she? It was a near 5 miles to the border of La Push, and from there it was another good 2 home. She didnt mind the walk, she had nothing better to do in honest. The rain was not a bother, she enjoyed it now. And the muddy water catching between her toes from the cheap flip flops was no bother ither. Just more simple things she enjoyed and could be easily taken care of.
A hot shower and then curling up on the pourch with her book seemed like the perfect way to end the day. Then cooking when Zak got home, and spending the night with him. Perfection. "I'm alright...really dont worry. Its just raining a little bit, and a long walk. Sometimes its better to enjoy life then watch it fly past you.."

Bella frowned a little, the expression looking a little foreign on her flawless lips. Why was she resisting? She couldn't have picked up on Bella's "species" that easily could she? She continued to drive at Corliss's pace, keeping up with her and leaning over. "Really, I insist. I'm going that way anyway." She lied. The res was nowhere near the Cullen's property but it had been so long since she'd had any human company. She pressed, but if the girl refused again she would have to leave her alone. Any further pressing and she would seem suspicious. In reality she was just lonely.

Drawing a breath in, Corliss stopped walking, her feet soaked in a muddle puddle at the road side. More rain poured down from the heavens, staining her gray t shirt. She wanted to ask why this girl was being so insistant upon giving her a ride, but then it occued to her. Maybe she was lonely just like Corliss was. Maybe the book was just a escape...but with one glance at the car she could clearly see that the girl had money. So why wasnt she off having a grand old time?
Her eyes moved down to her bag of ice cream. It would melt by the time she got back on foot, and the woman in the car seemed to want company something bad. Drawing another breath, she nodded. "Alright..sure..you know how to get to La Push right..?"

Bella smiled before leaning and grabbing the handle to unlatch the door and push it over. Did she know they way to La Push? Of course. She had only driven down there everyday back in her human life. She almost laughed out loud, but settled for a broad closed lipped smile. It would be nice to talk to someone other than one of the Cullens or Jake's pack. And something about Corliss intrigued Bella. She couldn't put her finger on it. But had SHE smelled that bad back when she was hung out with Jacob and the pack? It was really quite awful.
"Yea, I do." She said simply while she grabbed another book and a cardigan off the leather passenger seat. The car was painfully clean. Not a crumb or wrapper to be found. Plus she didn't drive it too often. She didn't need to unless she was going to town.
