Sarah walked up the road from her grandparents' house towards the small section of the rez that housed the few shops and stores. It wasn't anything grand, after all, it was just the rez stuff. A gift shop with touristy junk, a general store that had all the real stuff that people might need, and a few random shops scattered along the road. Hardly what Sarah was used to. Then again, she was a long way from Chicago.
Sarah laughed as she thought about Chicago. That was a LONG way from La Push, Washington. But it wasn't really any big problem for Sarah. She loved both places equally. Although she might not have shown it at first, she really did like La Push. She just didn't like that she was being shipped off to the rez while her parents helped her brother's school play host family in Europe.
But rather than dwelling on the situation with her parents, Sarah was happy just wandering around the rez. After all, it beat having to sit around and listen to her cousin, Paul, going on and on about Rachel, his newlywed wife. It was a little obnoxious at times, but at least it made for entertainment when she would tease him relentlessly about the whole deal.

A rusty old truck was backed up to the general store. Some coolers were in the back, the lids strapped down and they were held in place in the back with ratchet straps.
Jacob Black came out in a pair of cut-off jean shorts and t-shirt that was worn out, several holes and a rip in the back. He hefted up one of the coolers and carried it inside, came back and grabbed another when he spotted Sarah.
"Don't think I've seen you before. That must mean you are Sarah, right? Your grandparents are my neighbors."

Sarah turned in the direction of the voice. She smiled as she noticed a guy who couldn't be too much older than her talking to her. She raised an eyebrow at the fact that the entire rez already seemed to know who she was, when she had only just gotten here a few days earlier. "Yeah, I'm Sarah. And since you're one of my new neighbors that means that you're either Jacob or Embry. Right? So which of those would it be?"
Sarah grinned as she crossed her arms over her chest, walking to lean against the wall of the store. Those coolers looked to be insanely heavy. This guy had to be some kind of serious muscle builder. Most of the guys she had seen around the rez, her cousin included, were pretty huge. "Must be something in the water," Sarah mumbled to herself.

"Jacob", he grinned, carrying the last cooler inside. He came back and sat down on the tailgate, wiping the sweat off his face with a handkerchief. He had barely broken a sweat, but the act was to make it look like he had worked very hard.
"What do you think of the reservation so far? It was a fair question, though not something he really needed to ask. He knew what it had been like to be a teeenager on the reservation. Even if you knew everyone, there was REALLY nothing to do. Unless you happened to be...unique.
Someone called out for Jacob from inside and he got up and tucked the handkerchief in his back pocket. "I gotta settle up with Mr. Adkins. Want a soda?"

Sarah nodded to herself as she made a mental note to remember his name. Of course, with as few people on the reservation as there were, she was sure there wouldn't be too much trouble in remembering names. "Well, nice to meet you, Jacob." Sarah watched as he wiped a handkerchief across his forehead and shook her head. These guys were all so big! There had to be something in the water. Because, while Greg was big, he wasn't that big!
At Jacob's question about her opinion of the reservation, Sarah shrugged. "It really hasn't changed much since I was little. Same people, still nothing to do, etc. Just like always, really." Sarah smirked as she raised an eyebrow mischievously at Jacob. "Maybe you'd know what there is to do for fun around here. Care to share the entertainment secrets to a newcomer?"
When she heard a voice from inside the store, Sarah assumed that it was Jacob's boss. At the offer for a soda, Sarah shrugged and turned to go into the store as well. "Thanks. Although don't feel like you have to pay. Seriously, I can handle it myself. Not that I'm being rude, of course." Sarah shook her head, chuckling to herself. "Just shut up, Sari."

Jacob was standing there talling to Mr. Adkins, the owner of the store. He was a tall man, but stooped over, a kind face that was aged by the sun, silver hair long and tied back out of his face, wearing a button up plaid shirt and dark colored slacks with suspenders and a pair of moccasins. He was writting a check for Jacob from a ledger. "Thank your father and Sheriff Swan for the fish Jacob. They always sell very well." Jacob nodded and thanked Mr. Adkins, then turned and motioned for Sarah to follow.
The general store was neat and clean, kept swept and shelves stocked. Several people were wandering around getting groceries. "Nah, I got it. Concider it a gift Sarah." Jacob stopped infront of a drink cooler that hummed quietly. It was old, rusted in a few spots and pale yellow. It had a top that slid to one side or the other and Jacob reached in and pulled out one for himself, a Dr. Pepper in a glass bottle with a lid you had to pop with an opener. "If you get one from close to the bottom, they usually have ice chunks in them." He grinned showing her his drink that looked almost like a slushy. He stuck it in the opener and got it first try and waited for her to make a selection.

Sarah smiled as she glanced around the general store. It was just like she remembered it from when she had visited her grandparents as a kid. Exactly like she remembered it. Even old Mr. Adkins, although he now looked older. She nodded and walked past Mr. Adkins with a smile. "Hello again, Mr. Adkins. Nana sends her best wishes, as always." Sarah smiled to herself, wondering if he would recognize her, or if he would just automatically expect it, as the gossip around the rez had no doubt been circulating for long enough about her return for the year that he would automatically know who she was.
Sarah stopped at the drink cooler with Jacob and smiled as he insisted on covering the cost of the drink for her. "Well, thank you, Jacob." She shrugged and laughed as he mentioned the trick about the ones at the bottom being nearly icicles. She reached in and pulled out a bottle for herself, grinning as she shook the icy half-frozen drink around in the bottle. "Looks like I grabbed a soda slushy too."
She turned her attention to the bottle opener and frowned at the failed first attempt to open the bottle. Most of the time she would just get her brother to open glass bottles for her, just because she hated fighting with the bottle openers. She laughed in triumph as the second attempt opened the bottle. "And Sarah triumphs in the battle of the bottle opener once again!" She remembered that there were other people around and blushed slightly with a smile. "Long standing family joke."

Jacob walked up to the front and payed for the sodas, talking to the overweight woman behind an ancient looking cash register before walking out to the front sidewalk. He took a long drink from the bottle and then held it to his forehead, enjoying the coolness of it against his skin.
"So what have you been doing since you get here? Have you found anyone to hang out with?"

Sarah glanced around the store again as Jacob went to the front to pay for the sodas and then walked outside with him, smiling as he held the soda up to his forehead. It wasn't that hot outside, but perhaps he had just been hot from all the working that he had been doing for Mr. Adkins. After all, the coolers that he had been carrying looked heavy.
When Jacob asked her what she had been doing since she had gotten hear, Sarah laughed. "Nothing really. I've gotten to sit around and listen to Paul go on and on about Rachel; your sister, right? From what I've met of her, she seems nice. And I've been helping Opa in his workshop. I think our next project is a dining room table for your dad, actually. As far as finding anyone to hang out with, that's a no. You wouldn't happen to know anyone to fill that position, would you? I might be tempted to give you a specialized secret recipe cinnamon and chocolate brownie cake for your insider information."
Sarah laughed as she offered food to Jacob. From what she knew of guys, they were always hungry, and almost certainly loved sweets. Her brother Greg and Paul were both garbage disposals when it came to food. She swore that they could (and likely would if given the opportunity) eat their own weight in food. And she guessed that Jacob would probably fit into that same category as well.

"Sorry, everyone I know is older. But the Tribal Center will probably have a Fall Festival. Good time to go meet people and hangout."
Jacob remebered seeing a flyer for it in his dad's mail. These things were usually alot of fun. Music and food and people dancing and having a great time. It occured to him that if members of the other pack showed up, it might cause an issue though. Edward and Bella would never let Nessie come to the reservation, and Jacob didn't want to go without her. But he might not have a choice.
"Any plans for the afternoon?

Sarah laughed as Jacob apologized, saying that everyone he knew was older. She shrugged it off before smiling at the comment about a Fall Festival. That certainly sounded interesting. "Fall Festival, huh? Sounds intriguing. Maybe I'll check it out and possibly see you there for that one."
She made a note to ask Opa or Nana about this mysterious Fall Festival. It could be entertaining or it could just be a load of crap. Judging by the size of the rez, it was probably the latter of the two. But even then it would still be something to do on this crazy boring spot on the map.
Sarah was slightly startled when Jacob asked her what she was doing this afternoon. She shook her head and shrugged. "Nope, no plans for this afternoon. What did you have in mind?"

"Well, I don't have anywhere I neeed to be. I can show you around. Maybe we can hit the beach?" Jacob briefly wondered what was going on with him. Why would he want to spend time with anyone besides Nessie? No, he was just trying to enjoy a normal day with a normal friend. Not a pack member, not a vampire.

Sarah shrugged with a smile when Jacob offered to show her around. Sure beat sitting around at home. And who knows, she could always use another friend. "Sure. That sounds like fun. My own personal tour guide." Sarah laughed as she joked about that, before shaking her head. "You really don't have to do this. I could always just pull Paul around and make him show me around. Nana would love to get him out of her hair for a few hours. But then again, with Paul, who wouldn't want to get rid of him for a few hours?"
Sarah laughed as she shrugged off the thought of her cousin. Even if it wasn't for Paul being with Jacob's sister, she was sure that with a place this small, Jacob would know her cousin. A teasing glint sparkled in her eyes for a moment before she smiled mischievously at Jacob. "Alright, Mr Tour Guide, where to?"

Jacob wasn't sure about wandering around with someone, even if he was just being nice. Things tended to happen around him. But he needed to stay away from the Cullens for a day or two, just to keep Edward's temper down.
"Let's go down to the beach, it is nice if you haven't been."

Sarah smiled as Jacob suggested heading down to the beach. She hadn't been since the last time she had visited her grandparents when she was little, and so she couldn't exactly say she wasn't looking forward to it. "Sounds like fun. I haven't been in years, so it'll be nice to see if there's anything different. Unlikely, but who's keeping track?"
Sarah seemed to sense a little bit of hesitation from Jacob and raised an eyebrow. "Is something up? If it's none of my business you can just tell me to butt out."
