Esme turned the television off and gently tossed the remote controll onto the couch. There's nothing on, she thought. TV's really gone down these last few years. Back in the first days, black and white, tasteful television. She strolled lithely into the kitchen. She stared at the beautiful furnishings and the appliances. She could smell food in the refridgerator, but it was for Renesmee. None of her family ate it...ever. She was the only one in the house, for now. She was alone, and bored with nothing to do. Where are the children?, she thought.Surely someone has to be here. Esme, feeling a bit old and socially inept, and Carlisle-less, sent herself on a mission to find something to do with somebody. She had to be able to find someone in the house. "Emmett, Jasper?" Esme called as she searched through the house. She went from room to room, they were empty, and the sweet scents of her "children" weren't fresh. "Rose, Alice? Edward?" She called, but no one answered her. Not even Bella was there. What was she to do? She had nothing to occupy her time with, and her children were almost never all gone at the same time...it was so rare. What could they have been doing. Her sweet, sweet Nessie was not there either, was she at Jacob's? At this point, Jacob or Seth or even Leah would have been good company.

It was fall and the clouds were settling in one Forks. It think blanket of clouds hung low over the tops of the tall evergreens, hiding their canopies. A thin veil of mist swirled across the ground sandwiching the Cullen house between dove gray sheets. Bella ran the brief distance from Edward, Nessie and her cottage and the Cullen's at a moderate vampire pace, no sense in sprinting it since it was such a short run as it was. As she got closer the house sounded empty. One slight russeling sound. She inhaled as she came up upon the base of the house, Esme? She must have been alone.
Bella walked around to the front of the house and came up the front steps to the door. She was wearing a petal pink tank top with a gray cardigan and a pair of jeans duffed at her ankles, exposing her silver ballet flats. Her and Alice had recently found some middle ground on the clothing issue. Alice, of course wanted to dress her in beautiful designer clothes all the time and Bella would much rather wear her old clothes, usually from target or vintage pieces from her mom. She had finally caved on a shopping trip and appeased Alice by going on a JCrew shopping spree. Their clothes weren't OUTRAGEOUSLY expensive and they were comfortable, not too stuffy or dressy.
Bella carried a small faded blue hardcover book in her hand. She had borrowed it from Carlisle a few days earlier. She had finished it in a few hours but as usual had forgotten to bring it back. She opened the door and peeked in. "Hello Esme." She said with a warm smile on her full lips.

"Bella!" Esme exclaimed happily. Finally, someone was there to keep her company. Bella was beautiful, holding a book she'd loaned from Carlisle, standing in the doorway. Esme rushed to Bella and squezzed her lightly. "Finally, somebody's here to 'hang out' as you kids call it. Speaking of which," Esme pulled back from the hug, "You don't happen to know where the rest of the family is, do you?"

Bella almost jumped at Esme's enthusiasm. Clearly she had been alone all day. She often felt bad for Esme. Carlisle was the only one in their family with a steady job so he was off all day at work leaving Esme home alone. At least she had Edward and Nessie on most days. She made a mental note to herself to stop by more often.
She gripped the book in one hand as Esme embraced her. Bella smiled awkwardly and patted Esme on the back. She was still not fully used to being part of a family, but she was growing into it.
"I'm not sure." She said answering Esme's question. "Edward and Nessie are out having some father-daughter time today." She said smiling warmly at the thought. "But I'm not sure where everyone else is." She said with a shrug. She was as in the dark as Esme was on the others and she was a little surprised no one had told Esme they were leaving. How could she leave the book and go now? She was obligated to stay. Not that she minded. Esme was always wonderful to her. She remembered the first time she came over to the Cullen's and Esme embraced her as part of the family, no reservations and no questions asked.

"Oh." Esme's face fell a little. Nobody ever told her where they went, but Bella was here! Bella would stay...if she wanted. Bella didn't have to stay... "So, Bella, what did you need?"

She held up the blue book awkwardly in one hand. Sometimes she was still unsure of what to do with her new beautiful body and reverted back to her old human motions. Realizing she hadn't said anything she said "I borrowed this from Carlisle a few days ago. I meant to bring it back sooner..." She said biting her lip. She handed it to Esme. It was an original copy of "Sense & Sensibility" from 1811. She loved Carlisle's old books. There was something about re-reading all her favorite stories from the original publication that made them so much more interesting and new again.
"What have you been up to all morning?" She asked, though she assumed she knew the answer, nothing. Only a vampire for six years she wasn't often bored, everything was still new and sharp to her. She wondered though, if someday she would run out of things to do, or worse, things to talk about with Edward.

Carlisle walked into his house after a long night of working in the hospital, and smiled when he saw Bella and Esme there. “Hello,” He greeted them. He put his suitcase by the stairs, and walked over to stand by Esme. He kissed her lightly on her forehead and turned to smile at Bella. “What have you two been up to all morning?” He asked, throwing his arm lightly around Esme’s waist.

"Nothing," Esme pouted and kissed her husband. "I waited to see where everyone was, but they disappeared." She snapped her fingers for emphasis. "How was work?" Esme asked. She wound her arms Around Carlisle’s waist. She couldn’t let him go. Of course, it was silly, but she’d been alone all day…really, all day. She didn’t like it, she just had the parental paranoia that everyone she loved was in danger of something…but she also knew they were safe because all of the problems they thought she had were gone. They’d gotten rid of them all, she’d been part of it, and that’s how everything had finished. Done. Over. Today, and for the past few days, Esme had a growing tension in her, and around her. She could feel it in the air and even Jasper couldn’t calm her. She had this horrible feeling that something was coming. That this something was coming close, and it would endanger them, but she didn’t act upon it because there were no immediate signs of danger.

Carlisle frowned. "Why the pout?" He asked. He took his fingers and pulled her lips up slightly, smiling. "Work was slow. I missed you," He said. His work was hard and tiring. He missed his family - his kids and his granddaughter, Nessie, - especially Esme. He couldn't live for a couple of hours without her being there.

Bella smiled slightly, trying not to look too obvious as she watched the tenderness between her parents in law. He doted on her and she adored him. It renewed her hope that she and Edward would never loose interest in each other, though they had eternity together ahead of them.
She was glad to see Esme would no longer be alone this evening. Bella wanted to be home when Nes and Edward came home. She held the blue book out again. "I'm sorry I didn't bring it back sooner." She said to Carlisle, almost sad she had to return it. She made a mental note to start her own collection of antique books. "It's really a remarkable edition." She said referring to the age and condition of the book.

Carlisle smiled at Bella. "You can keep it if you want," He told her. "I really don't read them, well I don't have time to, but you can use them more." He offered. "Of course, you may take any of my books whenever you like, not that you have to tell me or anything, just grab it when you want," He put his hand in his pocket and tightened his other arm around Esme's waist. He felt better when she was there, by his side.

She held the small blue book tightly in her hands and looked down at it, touched by Carlisles offer. He was always so kind to her. They were both so generous and kind to her, always had been. She smiled and looked up at Carlisle, her eyes would have welled up with tears if she could cry "Thank you. Thank you so much." She said holding the book close to her chest now. The first book in her collection. She would always cherish it. It may have seemed like a small gesture, but it really meant a lot to her.
Ever since Nessie had started getting older, old enough to be her own person, Bella had found herself getting more and more emotional.

Carlisle smiled when he saw how happy he had made Bella. "Of course," He said. "If you want to go buy books, maybe we can arrange a time and go together," He offered. "I'm in need of some more books too." He chuckled. "My newest books are ten years old, I think it's about time for new ones," He told her.

"It's good that you're bonding..." Esme smiled happily. "And the pout, dear, is because I am under the impression that I'm not...'hip' anymore. Really, nobody's ever here! The only time I get to have fun is shopping with Alice and Rose...and that's something that can be scary too..." Esme said. Despite the slight inslut, she laughed. "But it gets better..." She kissed Carlisle again.

Carlisle smiled, kissing her back. "Your always and forever amazing, dear," He disagreed. "I need you to promise me something...It means a lot to me," He said.
