The shuddering sound of the bedroom door creaking open woke her from the light sleep she was drifting into. Normally she would sleep through anything, like a bear locked in hibernation. But since she had committed herself to him for eternity, she was sleeping lighter and lighter with each passing night. Why? The fear. She knew that he could take care of himself, and when he couldn’t his pack would. But what if he didn’t come home one night? His healing ability was amazing, his back would be clear of scratches or marrs from even the most passionate of love making between them. Like it never happened. The bruises on her wrist and shoulders from his ‘puppy bites’ and playfulness took longer to heal on herself. At times she nicknamed herself ‘the banana’ with her easy ability to bruise.
He could heal. He was fast. And he was strong. So she should have slept like a baby. But the fear of him not returning was nearly suffocating her. Why did he have to patrol still? If there was a threat, wouldn’t he know it? Did he leave because this imprint between them was warring and he was having second thoughts? Her fingertips roamed over her neck, feeling the leather choker that he gave to her in the place of a wedding band. He tanned the leather himself, pressed the intricate design and set the beautiful turquoise stone within its center. She loved it more then any ring or any other piece of jewelry within her life. She often laughed at the tan lines she now had because of it, her ‘ring neck’ painfully obvious on the few occasions she removed the band. She was his wife. Corliss Makwa.
Yes the name didn’t sound quite right, but she could care less. She loved him. She loved the sacrifices he made for her, moving into his old home, bringing back painful memories, all just for her. Time passed and she hoped that it healed all of the wounds, but part of her still was worried. And the worry was knowing at her core. Shoving the blanket aside, she quickly set her feet upon the cold floor and moved to the door, opening it wider to see a empty hallway. No, it was still early. He wouldn’t be home yet. Walking through the dark house, she grabbed the quilt off the couch and wrapped it around her shoulders before stepping out to the porch.
The air was damp, hanging heavily within the night as she slowly walked down the steps to the gravel walkway. She wouldn’t go far into the woods. No, he hated when she did that. Just to the outskirts, just to try and see him or any of the others out there. Just a flicker of fur would be comforting.

Zak shifted back into his human form a few yards in the treeline. The cool wind was like daggers against his molten skin. He closed his eyes and lifted his head slightly letting the wind run through his hair. He opened his eyes and untied the rope from his arm, taking the over sized shorts and pulling them on, keeping them up with the rope. He jammed his hand in his pocket and pulled out a piece of string and used it to tie his long black hair into a loose ponytail. He took in a deep breath of the night air in then his head snapped to the right. A sweet aroma met his nose, one that he always seemed to long for and never could get enough of. He glided silently through the rest of the way to the tree line, the greenery barley rustled under his feet. He stayed tight to a large tree and glanced around it discreetly.
There she was, looking like a vision in the moonlight which shone off her pale skin. His eyes drank her up, the beautiful woman he was lucky to call his wife. He slid out into the open silently when she was looking the other way and came up behind her. Leaning in slightly he placed his hands on her hips and took a deep wiff of her hair. "Beloved..." Was all he could think of too say.

A thin smile graced her lips as her head bowed slightly, one hand raising to caress his cheek. The bitter October air was brutal to her body, naked except for the quilt she had wrapped around herself for modesty sake. The home they shared was bordered by more woods then other homes, but one could never be too careful. The last thing she needed was one of his pack trotting by and seeing her in nothing but 'moon skin'.
Corliss knew she was being stupid. He would always come home to her. The imprint was eternal, and so would be the love they shared. But in the dark of night it was always far too easy for her mind to roam to the most wicked thoughts within her heart. Black and shadowed, she knew the reality of them was nothing more then her over active imagination. But still, it was enough to set the dark circles beneth her eyes and keep her out within the bitter cold wind of Fall, looking and waiting for him. His patrol would be done, hopefuly, and he would come back within there home and sleep beside her. It happened night after night, but she still couldnt help but give into her fear.
"If..something was going on..you would tell me right?" Her voice was soft, a slight chatter to her words as the quilt did little to sheild her. Again it was foolishness to ask. He would tell her, protect her, keep her and everyone else safe. But it seemed to her that Duncan and the rest of the pack were away more often, wolf more then man. She already felt like a outsider, and silence only made it worse.

Zak pushed his cheek against her hand, loving how her cold skin contracted against his. She spoke, her teeth chattering in the cold. Zak pulled Corliss close to him, warming her with his ever warm body. He placed his hand under her chin and pulled it up slightly so that she was looking in his inquiring eyes. "Corliss...you know I would never be able to hide anything from you..." He leaned down and kissed her gently on the corner of her lip.
"Your the love of my life. I would never be able to hide anything from you, and if you were ever in any danger I'd take you miles away in a moment." He pressed her close against his warm chest, sheltering her from the brisk night air.

His warmth spread through her easily. At times she chuckled, recalling when they first met, how she was concerned her was sick with a fever. The heat coming from his skin was always near boiling, and it was quite a blessing in the cold winter months. As long as he was with her, she never needed to turn the heat on in the house, snuggled close to his side absorbing her 'walking furnace'. Even now she gingerly stepped onto his feet, her own bare ones like ice against his skin as she wrapped her arms around him, closing the quilt about them both and nuzzling her face into his chest.
"I know. I'm sorry to ask. Just..a worry. Isnt that my job to worry being the Den mother and all?" Her tone was light teasing. Even after all her time in Forks she never lost her New England accent, it sticking heavily to her words. It suited her, seeing she was never going to be part of the universe that seemed to be seperate from the rest. The little hollow world of Forks and La Push Washington.
Lifting her chin, Corliss smiled up to him and kissed the hollow of his neck, her cool naked body pressing to his tightly. "Take me to bed you..." She smirked.

"If it's your job to worry then it's mine to attempt to negate your worries, however futile my attempts may be." He lifted his head and smiled. Her cool, naked body pressed up against his was always something that brought butterflies to his stomach, no matter how long they had been together. He looked down at her as she told him to take her to bed. He stepped away from her and bowed slightly. "Your wish is my command." Without thinking he wrapped his arms around the small of her back and gently lifted her up against him.
He zoomed gracefully through the empty space between the house and the woods, up the porch of the pale blue, up the stairs to the second floor, across the landing and into the large front bedroom they now shared. He slowed to a normal pace as he crossed the threshold to the room and he walked to her side of the bed placing her gently on the bed before rolling over her to land gently on the bed beside her.

The first few times that he whisked her away in a whirlwind of speed and grace, she was scared. Why wouldnt she be? But as time passed, she grew used to it. It was never dull, but just not as frightening as it once was. The thrill of his abilitys always made her proud, her husband was a powerful beast of the night, and he was her protector. She was certain he would fight even death himself for her. That thought brought a small satisfied smile to her lips as she turned, resting her head upon his shoulder.
"The bed is far too large and far too empty without you in it..." She mummered, her lips pressing against his blazing flesh. Her hair had grown longer since they had been together, now hanging just below her shoulder blades in loose curls. The dark chestnut against her pale skin was a beautiful contrast, as the sollen moonlight filtered in through the windows, basking her skin in a light blue glow.

Zak wrapped his arm around his beloved's pale, brittle frame as she spoke against his chest. "How I ever managed to live without you here I will never know. Looking back now my life was so empty without you here. It was like a life without meaning. Without essence." His hand ran through her long hair, he loved the way it curled ever so slightly, just enough to accent the already beautiful shade of her hair. He lifted a lock to his face and took in her scent, it seemed that everything about her infatuated his senses.
How lucky he had been to have been caught in that accidental flash of light that came from her camera so long ago. How lucky he had been to trust he enough to shift into his wolf form to show her what he truly was. Upon laying his golden eyed upon her, having been more comfortable in his wolf for, he imprinted on the girl before him. Since then she had been every bit of his existance.

A small smile graced her constantly chapt lips as he touched her hair, stroking it down her back till the ends curled in smooth softness. Every time he touched her it was wonderful, felt so amazingly good that she wondered how she ever survived without his touch. Was it possible? Could she call the life she had before him a life at all? With all the sillyness about ghosts and hauntings, it was childish, or at least it felt that way. Not that being with him was more adult. She had lost count of the ticklefights, the silly games and endless laughter that seemed to bring them closer to eachother with each passing moment.
Pressing her lips to his neck again, she propped herself up upon her elbow and chewed her lower lip. She had a question she had been meaning to ask him for some time, but she never knew when it was a good time. He was off with his pack, or they were in mixed company. The time they had alone was far and inbetween it seemed. "Zak...have you ever thought of leaving La Push...?"

Zak looked up at Corliss as she propped herself up on her elbow and removed his arm from on top of her, laying on his back. "Leave La Push?" His face twisted to a worried and questioning look. He was confused as to why she would ask that. He thought she loved it here. "Why do you ask Corliss? Is everything okay?" Concern filled his eyes as he looked on his beautiful wife. He knew his life style was unorthodox. He was always on patrols or had a few members of the pack with him at the house but they always had nights together, whether she was awake or not, and he always tried to get more time with her.

"I know..strange...I dont like change..but..." Her teeth sunk within her lower lip as she looked at him. She didnt mind La Push, the days were dull, and she was certain she had found every graveyard or indian burial ground in sight. Her nighttime walks had slowly ended, and she was more and more comfortable being home just reading or writing. But was it really the best place?
"Zak, is La Push the best place to raise a child..?" Corliss asked, taking his hand and kissing his palm, dragging it down to rest upon her stomach. "Thats..if you still want a baby..." No, she wasnt pregnate. Not yet at least. It was within her plans, they had the 'talk' and decided that if it happened, it happened. But the more time she had alone, the more time she could think if a land filled with vampires and shifters was the best for a baby.

Zak pushed himself against the bed, lifting so that he was sitting against the battered head board. He looked down at His wife and then out the window at the only home he had ever known. His large hand, the one she didn't have on her stomach, and ran it across his pulled back hair. "Corliss, you know I want nothing more than to raise a family with you. Your the girl of my dreams and I love you more than you could possibly ever imagine." He lifted her hand to his lips and kissed it lightly as he looked back to her sea-foam green eyes. "I know that you don't see La Push as a safe place to raise a child but it really is. Vampires are everywhere Corliss, and right now we live in probably the safest place from them in the country."
He closed his eyes as he thought about what he was going to say. "La Push is the only place I've ever lived, same as my father and his father before him all the way back to the very first shifter in our bloodline. The culture and people here are just so rich I just couldn't imagine keeping that life away from our child." He slid back down and placed his hand on Corliss' stomach and gazed into her eyes, his eyes filled with passion. "I want this child to know who it is and where it comes from. To have an Uncle Rellyn and an Aunt Juliana but it couldn't have that anywhere else."

The tourist nodded. It made sense. The child was the safest here, in this small circle of monsters that would give there lives for him..or her. Whatever it chose to be. Deep down Corliss hoped for a girl, female shifters were rare. It was a males job to keep things safe...and she didnt know if she could bare the thought of having her son running beside Zak in a shifted form. Taking a deep breath, she could smell the sweet night air creeping through the cracked window. Even though it was October, she still loved to hear the night playing with the trees and sky. Loons cries, crickets lasts songs, and the comforting howl of her wolves within the woods.
"Your right. I'm just scared Zak." She sat up within the bed, the blankets spilling from her to rest within her lap. "I know the baby will be the safest in the world here, with the family protecting it...I know that..." Corliss's voice broke as she laughed softly, shaking her head. "Sorry, just the night talking...when I have too much time to think..."

Zak sat up on his knee's in front of Corliss and took her hands in his. "I know you don't like to think of it but our child may be a shifter. I don't like the idea of putting the child at risk either but I can't deny the child it's true heritage." He took his wife's face in his large hands and leaned in close to her. "If I had my way I would never be away from you. I would love to have you running beside me even." He leaned in and kissed her gently before wrapping his arms around her waist and holding her bare chest to his.
"If you really want to...we can move." His mind shied away from the thought. He didn't like the idea at all but he would do anything...anything to make her happy. Even if it meant sacrificing the thing he loved most.

As her worst fears left his lips, she could feel her heart sinking within the pit of her stomach. She always knew, that if she ever did carry his child, it would be a shifter. She recalled a conversation she had with him, that the imprint wasnt just for love, but it was to help the shifters live on. The ones picked, the ones that love shot out, were so because they were strong enough to carry the shifter within them. Perfect for breeding. So Corliss was a good den mother, even if the child was to be a shifter, she would love it. Protect it more fericly then any wolf against a threat.
But it was so unfair. The times that they spent within the woods, him within his form, she could do nothing but feel the acid of jelously burning within her stomach. Him and his whole pack. She wouldnt, and couldnt ever be one of them. It wasnt a simple like with vampires...one bite, one suck..and your done for. No. And he wasnt a werewolf, so there was no curse to share. It was spiritual, and a honor to be a shifter. But looking at Duncan, and Rell, she didnt understand. Why did they get the chance? And she was denied.
None of this was ever put to words, it was unfair of her to be so childish. Shaking her head as much as she could while he held her, Corliss gave a pained smile. "Zak, we are not moving...this is our home, here in La Push. And it will be our childs home, and so on and so forth..." She felt guilty making him worry like this, but she couldnt stand keeping her thoughts bottled up. "Someone needs to keep the world safe from the creatures of the night..."
