Jacob had nothing better to do. Everyone was out of the house, none of his pack was around, and Alice had taken Nessie shopping for her new school clothes. He decided to take advantage of having nothing better to do and decided to relax.
Stretched out on the porch of Bella and Edward's cottage in his wolf form, he lay there feeling the smooth wood under him and the muggy air. He let out a slow sigh.

Bella was inside reading when she heard the heavy foot of what only could be Jake. He had started frequenting their roof on sunny days. Their cottage was nestled in the prime location to take in sunny days in Forks. She smiled. It was nice to have him around. She tried not to take advantage of their friendship, remembering how she had nearly lost it forever. Though there was now always this underlying tension between them.
She put down her book on the side table next to her arm chair. She stood up and walked to the front door. She opened it up and stepped a few steps out. The sun washed over her skin making her ivory flesh sparkle lightly. She didn't look up, he could hear her. "Jake. I know you're up there." She said with a smile. "Do you want to come in and I'll make you something to eat?" She was so happy to have any opportunity to cook. She had Nessie and sometimes Jake or Seth to cook for. But she had to share their stomachs with Esme as well, who cooked for them any opportunity she got. Sometimes she made a batch of cupcakes or cookies for Carlisle to take to the hospital and give out.
She let the sun warm her cool skin and closed her brown eyes smiling. It was rare the sun shined like this in the fall and even rarer she was allowed to go out in it.

Jacob lumbered off the roof and landed lightly on the ground. He walked up to Bella, wagging his tail happily, stopping to wipe his paws off before entering the house and barking happily to her.
Out of sight he walked behind the couch to shift back to his human form and pull on his shorts. "Hey Bella. Sorry, didn't mean to interupt you. I just wanted to...take advantage of the sun."
In reality waiting on the roof gave him a good advantage to see and hear when Nessie returned.

Bella smiled and scratched behind his ear a little before turning around and walking back into the cottage. She pushed the hair behind her ears and walked into the open kitchen that looked into the little living room. She grabbed a green apron from the hook and put it over her head, tying it in the back.
"You weren't interrupting anything at all." She said going into the kitchen and opening the cupboards to pull out a bowl. "What can I make you Jake?" She asked smiling and pulling out a red bowl and putting it onto the counter before going to the fridge.

Jacob took up a seat at the bar, resting his elbow on the bar and his chin on hand. "Oh, you know. Whatever. I'm appreciate you making food for me. Since you really don't...need to eat. He turned his head as if listening and stared back up the drive and the direction of town. Alice and Nessie..ah Reneeseme are on the way home. You should make something she will like too."
Despite the fact that his feelings for Nessie were incredibly strong, he still had feelings for Bella, even if he didn't admit it to anyone. He watched as she turned to the oppisite wall.

"Snack or meal?" She asked with a smile. She played this game with her father all the time when she was a human. It used to drive him crazy. She turned around and leaned on the counter with both hands and looked at him with a broad close lipped smile. Her eyes sparkled. She loved cooking for people. Taking care of her miss-matched makeshift family.
Jake was probably there to see Nessie. She was getting older now and she wondered when the day would come she would have to give up her little girl. Nessie was still fairly young mentally, though her body was quite mature, but she had started asking questions. Her and Edward would need to have a very serious talk soon with Jake. Bella missed her old relationship with Jake, before she was stuck between him and Nes.

"I think just a snack. We can go hunting later. I know a farm not far outside of town where the deer are eating the crops. The farmers would appreciate the help." Jacob drummed his fingers on the counter, trying to be casual. He thought back to a few days ago when he and Nessie had gone hunting. She had tried to corner him and question him about the nature of his place in her life. He had tried to be reassuring and vague, but in reality he knew that this wasn't going to satisfy her curious nature. She came by it honestly.

She smiled. That's what she had been hoping for. She had been looking for an opportunity to try a new cookie recipe out. She went back to the cupboard and hummed softly while she grabbed the ingredients she needed. She stopped, realizing she humming out loud. She hated the sound of her voice. She turned back with her thin arms full of food. She dumped them on the counter and dusted her hands off from the powdery flour bag.
She got to work measuring ingredients. "So how was hunting?" She asked remembering their trip out the other day.

"Oh..really good. She took down a mountain lion all by herself. Eseme met up with us and get to see it. I took the pelt to dad. He is going to tan it and make her something nice. A traditional native dress maybe."
He decided to leave out the part where they went skinny dipping in the pool below the waterfall.
"She...she asked me if I was like her big brother. I don't mind that she thinks of me that way...but you know that I hope we will be more...eventually. I told her that I was whatever she needed me to be, and that I would always be here for her. That seemed the best thing at the time."

When he said he would someday hope to be more she dropped her spoon. Her jaw tensed up and something rose up from the pit of her stomach. It was too soon to be having that talk with her. She was still a child. She pursed her lips and turned around trying to act casual. "Oh... Sorry..." She said absently apologizing about the spoon. She bent over and picked it up off the cottage floor. She went to the sink and started washing it off.
"Did she ask anything else?" She asked quietly. There was no ignoring the thick haze of tension that was now looming in the room with them. Their relationship was so complicated. She realized she and Jake would never be Bella and Jake again. She looked out the window as she rinsed off the spoon and waited for Jake's answer.

"Not really." he shrugged it off and stared out the window at the road. The kitchen had a thick tension hanging over it. Jacob sat with his hands folded, trying to find a way to get the words out around the lump that was forming in his throat.
"Bells...you know how I feel about her. I've been here since the day she was born. I've been whatever she needed me to be. We're not.....I'm not going to be anything she isn't ready for me to be. You can trust me, remember?"

She froze. She didn't know how she was feeling. She didn't think this was something she was going to have to deal with so soon. Though since no one had any experience with children like Nessie, no one really knew when her brain would catch up with her body, let alone her emotions. She bit her bottom lip, her back still turned to Jake. She wondered if Edward was listening in.
She turned around quickly and smiled, trying to seem pleasant. "Jake, of course I know I can trust you." She said furiously adding ingredients to the bowl and stirring violently. She was a terrible liar, and Jake could always tell when there was something bothering her. It frustrated her to have no secrets.

Jacob walked over and chewed on his lip as he reached out and took hold of her hand, gently stopping her from stirring so hard. "I know you trust me. But she is also still your little girl, and she is growing up three times faster than a normal child." He took her shoulder and gently turned her to face him. Every emotion on her mind was easily seen on her face. He smiled his usual, disarmingly casual smile.
"One of the things about being immortal Bells, we have nothing but time. It may be a few years yet, so relax ok. Trust me, and trust Reneesme. You've done a great job with her."

She stopped stir when he put his burning hot hand on hers. She didn't look at him. Then he took her chin and gently lifted her face up to look into his brown eyes. He had the best intentions but he was right, Nessie was her little girl and she never felt like she had enough time with her. What should have been the baby years ended up being months and was lost in a swirl of Volturi drama. Her childhood was shared with everyone else wanting to be with her and Bella often felt she was missing something, a real mother-daughter bond with the girl that looked like her sister but was actually her child.
If she could cry a tear would have run down her ivory cold skin. Instead a look of anguish came over her face and she collapsed into Jacob's warm chest.

He held her to his chest, stroking her hair. He wished that he was able to do this more often. "It's ok. This is all new. But she loves you and Edward. And she knows you love her. He wished he knew what to say, or how to help. He just stood there, quietly holding her and letting her get out the pent up emotion.
"What if you two took a few days away. A little girl time? She'll be starting school soon. She is going to need you...and all of us."
