It was a wet fall day in La Push. The whole week had been bleak and both Maya and her mutt Darcey had started growing anxious. They usually spent any waking moment they could outside, but since her mother had caught wind of her brush with death at the beach she had asked Maya to take it easy for awhile. She had reluctantly agreed to appease her mother, but Maya couldn't wait any longer.
She woke up in a foul mood and knew the only thing that would help her clear her thoughts and re-center herself was a hike. She threw on a pair of torn jeans, a faded yellow v-neck t-shirt, threw on her hiking boots and grabbed her ivory beret and gray zip up hooded sweatshirt before dashing out the door with her keys, Dacrey following close behind, his tail wagging like an idiot.
She tore down the back roads in her black jeep, feeling the wet air finger through her long umber hair. She smiled and inhaled the fresh damp air. When she got to the trail head, nothing more than a parting in the trees, she pulled over and turned off the engine. Darcey jumped out before she could open the door for him and she laughed at his inpatients. She knew exactly how he felt. He took off down the trail and she took off after him at a brisk pace, with her mini day pack on her back full of some light snacks and her canteen.

The silver wolf sped across the passage, dodging trees like an expert. She jumped over a few fallen logs and crushed the twigs that dared lie in the wolf’s path. Tearing through bramble bushes, Leah felt a sharp thorn break her skin after finding an entry through the thick mass of fur she had on her body. The wolf yelped and jumped up on a rock. She turned to look at how drastic the cut was, but it was gone already. If she had been human, she would’ve smiled.
Then she looked up and heard a dog barking. She could smell the mutt and a human who was probably it’s owner. Leah didn’t have time to convert back into her human form as the people were so close, they would be a little shocked to see a naked woman walking around a passage, so she jumped down from the rock and hid behind it.
No, it wasn’t big enough to conceal her body, but it was the best thing she could do.

Maya was perfectly content out here in the woods around La Push. The burns brushed the bottom of her jeans, leaving the bottom 2 inches of her pants wet with leftover raindrops. Darcey walked ahead of her at a trot, his nose to ground taking in all the new and familiar smells of the forests the frequented so often.
Darcey's head snapped up suddenly in the direction of rock not too far off. Suddenly he snarled and backed up toward Maya, the fur on his back standing up down his spine. Maya stopped dead in her tracks, her body tensing. She looked wide eyed in the direction Darcey was facing, still bearing his teeth and now only a few feet in front of her. The rock was large, a little shorter than her and wider by far. She could vaguely see something standing behind it, but it was masked by the mist that had settled in the valley.
She would have thought it was a bush or something, but then she saw it move. She took one step back debating whether to run or stay put. She couldn't make out what it was, if it was a large deer or something carnivorous. She held her breath and clenched her fists.

Leah had to think, fast. If she stepped out in wolf form, this girl could get hurt. Not because Leah would attack her, because if the girl tried to attack her, or even the dog, she’d get angry. And when a wolf gets angry, they get angry. She curled into a ball and bit the rope on her back leg that had her clothes tied and she transformed back into her human form.
She pulled on her clothes as quick as possible and stood up. She smiled sheepishly and waved at the girl standing before her. “Hello,” She said, her voice a little too high than it should have been. But it generally did get like that when Leah was a little scared. The woman pulled her T-shirt straight and almost cursed under her breath. Now she had to come up with some kind of excuse as to why the dog had been barking at her. And why she was behind that rock. Perfect, Leah. “Cute dog,” She said, trying to keep the girl from asking questions. Then she bit her lip before looking into the girl’s eyes. Leah knew she’d probably scared her or something. Well done, Leah.[/blockquote]

{OOC: I'm going to play it like they knew each other before Maya went away from school but haven't seen each other since she's been back. Let me know if thats ok.}
Maya was still holding her breath when she saw the thing move again and then disappear, the sound of russeling fabric could be heard very faintly. Her brow furrowed as she looked harder at the rock.
Darcey's ear lowered in confusion as a woman about Maya's size stepped out from behind the rock. Her clothes looked a little disheveled and she didn't look like she was dressed for a hike as strenuous as the trail they were on. Darcey looked back at Maya and she exhaled, relaxing her body. The woman greeted her, but she was still too far away to make out who it was. Maya stepped a few feet forward through the fog and then could make out the familiar face.
"Oh. Leah?" She asked squinting to make sure. Maya and Leah ran around with different circles and Leah was a bit older than Maya, though she looked much younger than she was. Maya had been gone for a few years, but Leah looked different. Maya couldn't put her finger on it, but there was something about her... "Oh thanks. I-You scared me." She said shaking her head and smiling a little looking down at the forest floor. What the hell was wrong with her eyes? She could have sworn there was something bigger there just a second ago. She relized she was being majorly weird and tried to save herself "I mean, How are you?" She asked looking up.

{OOC: Yeah, that’s fine =D}
When Leah realised who it was, she let a breath escape her body. It was another Quilete girl. Not a shape-shifter, but Leah knew Maya from a while ago and she wasn’t too sure if the girl knew about the shifters. Probably not actually. She’d disappeared for a while and probably didn’t even know about the rumours running around about ‘big bears’. Leah chuckled at the idea and looked back at Maya.
“Oh, Maya, it’s you.” Leah tugged at her shirt again, it didn’t seem to want to go straight. She frowned and decided to just leave it as it was. Then she looked back at maya and shook her head. “Oh… well yeah, okay I guess. Some crazy stuff’s been going on around here…” Crazy was an understatement. The stuff going on at La Push and Forks was absolutely manic. Maya hadn’t been there through all the vampire scares and it was probably better that she wasn’t. Leah was actually glad, for Maya’s sake, that she had left. {OOC: Does Maya know about the Leah/Sam/Emily situation?}[/blockquote]

{OOC: She doesn't know about the pack, but she's heard rumors about the break-up I'm sure.}
Maya had heard a thing or two around the reservation about some animal attacks in the years she was gone and she had picked up on a slight change in the mood on the reservation, people seemed to always be just the tiniest bit on edge. She bit her lip. "Yea, my mom mentioned it." She said laying a hand on Dacrey's head, he seemed confused but her touch seemed to calm him slightly. He still continued to sniff in Leah's direction the the direction of the rock.
"How have you been? It's been ages." She remarked as she looked up toward the canopy. What was Leah doing out here alone. Given Maya was alone, but Leah didn't look dressed for a hike. It was strange to be meeting up like this this far from the road. Not to mention there was no sign of another car at the trail head, Leah must have parked elsewhere.

{OOC: Right, okay.}
Leah smiled. Maya would’ve heard about everything going on around La Push from someone. Her mom was pretty into it. Well, as into it as a human can be anyway. Of course Maya would probably have been told about loads of animal attacks; another lie that Dr. Fang used to cover his tracks. Most of the La Push residents thought that all them stories about the ‘cold ones’ and the Quiletes being descended from wolves was all a myth. Ha! Silly, silly humans.
“Oh, yeah,” Leah looked down to the ground. She should probably tell Maya about the Sam stuff. Then again, she probably already knew. But Leah hadn’t gotten it all off her chest since all them years ago with Jacob. She needed to talk to someone again. “Okay, to cut a long story short; me and Sam broke up, he got with my cousin, I turned suicidal and then all the crazy stuff happened after that. Oh yeah, they’re married now too. I was a bridesmaid.” Leah Clearwater looked at Maya’s dog and patted his head. He seemed to be pretty interested in her. Damn, he must have had an idea that she was ‘that thing’ behind the rock. Damn, damn, damn.[/blockquote]

Maya's mouth gaped at the sudden out pour of personal information. It almost seemed like she just needed to say it to someone, even if it was Maya whom she barely knew. She closed her mouth as she watched Leah put a hand on Darcey's head. He reacted by sniffing it curiously and then ducking away, walking around the back of the rock with his nose to the ground. Maya didn't notice, she was too distracted by Leah's story. Her mom had mentioned that too of course. But not in full detail. Maya had disregarded it not wanting to take her mom's word for it, seeing as it came from the reservation rumor mill. Hearing it now first hand Maya could hardly believe it. As a teenager Leah and Sam had been the epitome of the perfect reservation couple. Hear now they were no more and that he had moved on so quickly she could hardly believe it.
"Oh. I'm so sorry Leah." She said awkwardly but sincerely. She rubbed her arm with her left hand. "I really am."

Leah smiled and nodded. “I’ve… sorta gotten over it- him.” Leah lied. It was a lie she really wished that she could believe, and one that she desperately wanted to come true. Leah looked over at the dog quickly and bit her lip. Dogs aren’t stupid, no matter how stupid their owners think they are. Wolves and dogs are pretty close in the animal kingdom, and wolves are very clever. “It happened ages ago anyways. It kinda pissed me off that he moved on so fast. But I understand now…” Leah couldn’t really say much about it as leaking to Maya about the shape-shifter pack. Darn, she really wished that there could be another female werewolf. That’d make things a lot easier. Stupid damned genes… {OOC: Sorry for short post >-<}[/blockquote]

Maya shifted not knowing what to say. She was never good with personal stuff. Probably why she didn't have a lot of close friends. "Well... uh... you look great." She said with a smile gesturing to Leah lightly. She really did, it was hard to believe she was around 30. She looked strong and glowing, more so than other girls on the reservation, but almost not physically, it was almost more in the way she was standing or an energy of some sort.
"Darcey!" Maya said suddenly snapping her head. He was about to roll in something, a impulse he rarely acted on. He knew better. "Christ. I don't know what's going on with him these days. Ever since I came back he's been acting so funny." She said as the dog slinked back to her side, ashamed, as if he couldn't help what he was doing. She thought back to the other day at the beach when he had acted so odd around Duncan and now here.

Leah had to smile. Maya really didn’t want to know what was up with her dog at the moment. The shape-shifters around here obviously set off the dog and made him act funny. It was obviously a new scent to him. But he could be a problem as if he was too smart, the dog could figure out what was going on around here and possibly even show the humans who the shape-shifters really were. Sam wouldn’t let that happen, of course. Unfortunately, his way of dealing the dog would not end well for the mutt, or his owner either. Poor Maya.
“Has he done it around anyone else lately? Seth? Sam? Emily?” Leah almost winced as she spoke the final names of her question, then she tried to smile. Seth and Sam would stink of the shape-shifter scent, and Emily would probably smell a bit iffy to the dog too. Poor ol’ Maya had a human nose and therefore couldn’t tell the difference between the shifters, the leeches or the humans. Maybe Leah smelt a bit of dog and the leeches would smell absolutely delicious to the girl. Oh yes, everything about them blood-suckers was alluring to humans. But Leah despised the smell and stayed as far away from that vegetarian pack in town as possible. But her attention was leaving the question she had just asked Maya and, afraid of not catching some important information, Leah looked at Maya again and opened her ears. She awaited the response from the native-American human and smiled. “Just of of curiosity.”[/blockquote]

She had no clue what was going on with Darcey. Maybe it was just the new smells of the reservation. He was a city dog after all.
She looked at her dog as she thought. "Actually yea..." She said turning back to Leah. "I saw Duncan White at the beach the other day. Darcey wouldn't leave him alone. Do you know him?" She asked cocking her head a little bit.
Her stomach turned as she thought about the incident at the beach earlier that week. The way he took one look at her and it was like he was suddenly come over by a violent illness. He ran out into the ocean and threw up for god sake. Then to top it off, she had made a fool of herself, chasing after him since he had stolen her board and in pursuit nearly drowned. He saved her and then out of rage she told him off and stormed home. Humiliating.

Duncan White? No, Leah didn’t know a Duncan White. But if Darcey was acting like this with him as well as Leah, he must’ve been a werewolf or a shape-shifter. Maybe Jacob would know. But Leah still had a bit of digging to do, she needed to find out as much about this guy from Maya as possible. “C’mon, let’s walk and talk.” Leah smiled, something she’d been doing quite a bit while she was with Maya. Maybe the two could become better friends later on or something. Maya’s company kept Leah both happy and distracted.
“So, this Duncan White, who is he? Does he live on the reservation?” Of course ,there were more questions Leah could ask, but two would probably be enough for now and if Leah started cramming questions into poor Maya’s head, she might explode or something. Ha! What a ridiculous expression.[/blockquote]

Maya smiled and nodded following Leah and walking in step with her down the vague path. Darcey took her cue and resumed trotting ahead with his nose to the ground, chasing any bird or bug he found. Leah asked about Duncan. To be honest, Maya didn't know too much about him. "Yea, he lives with his Nan down by the grocery store." She looked down at her feet as they stepped over a log that had fallen over the trail. "You've probably seen him around. Big... Blond." She attempted to describe him. He surely stuck out on the Rez, he didn't look like a native. She remembered the way he looked at her at the beach. Like he was in pain. It was so strange.
